2021 Theme:

Still Kingdom Building

Greetings John Wesley Faith Community,

Welcome to December! We enter the Advent Season waiting for the fullness of the blessing of the One who comes in the name of the Lord, even the Son of God, whose name is Jesus.
Grace and peace to you from God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has created us out of His love for us and lets us know that He is present with us by the gift of His Son Jesus born in Bethlehem.  Jesus’ coming among us is the basis of all our hope in this life and in the life to come.
Isaiah 9:6   reads:
A child is born to us, a son is given to us,
and authority will be on his shoulders.
He will be named Wonderful Counselor,
         Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
         Prince of Peace.
Four titles for the son born to us.  Today, it is to our delight that the initial name given is “Wonderful”.  The one who is born to us is wonderful – a name that means “out of the ordinary” and when used in reference to God, it suggests “Supernatural” or that which happens when all our assumed limitations are overcome by the one who is wonderful.
Although Jesus is in the far distance of Isaiah’s vision, the word fits him perfectly.  Amid all the theology of what it means that he is “God with us”, is the pure wonderfulness of the things he did.  Healing a person unable to walk and giving sight to the blind is wonderful!  Curing an ailing daughter and raising a man’s dead son is wonderful.
What Jesus brings into our lives is the prospect of wonderful things happening – and that we might be a part of bringing wonderful events into the lives of others.  That we know and have seen in the eyes of our faith informed by the words of Scripture the deeds of Jesus, is to know that life is meant to be wonderful – out of the ordinary.  As we enter this time of Advent, let’s look for wonderful things to happen that makes life wonderful:  loving acts of sharing and caring, precious gifts showing kindness and thoughtfulness, and maybe the remaining days and nights of this year where we can truly sing, and say “All is calm, all is bright.”
Jesus is Wonderful, of that there is no doubt.  May His coming fill our days with Wonder – enough to overflow in ways that bring a wonderful life to those around us.  Look beyond our limitations.  Look for the miracle that makes you say: “Wonderful”.
Thank you, members who remain committed and faithful in serving God and God’s people in this place called John Wesley, in Baltimore City, and in the world that we may be a presence for the Lord.

I Love You. I Look Forward to seeing you Sunday.
Together, We Can Build the Kingdom of God!!!
